Residents of homes for the elderly in the Czech Republic often receive medicines that they do not need, or in inappropriate doses; the risks of side effects and drug interactions are little monitored. This was shown by the Senior 2016 project, in which doctors with clinical pharmacists evaluated the administration of drugs in five facilities.
The medical records were used to audit the use of drugs in 357 clients. Only 53 did not need any change in medication, for the others 788 recommendations for adjustment were issued, on average 2.2 recommendations per senior. The average age of the monitored clients was 83 years, each taking an average of 8.2 drugs.
