The International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated annually on 20 May, i.e. on the day when James Lind began in 1747 his controlled study comparing different method of scurvy treatment published in 1753, A Treatise of the Scurvy (www.jameslindlibrary.org).

The sailors, suffering from the scurvy after two months on the sea, were divided into 6 groups. Each group was given, besides the same meals, daily something extra – a quarter liter of cider, 25 drops of elixir of vitriol (sulphuric acid), 6 tea spoons of vinegar, half liter of sea water, two oranges and a lemon and the last group was given a spicy pasta with decoction of barley. Treatment of the group with fruit has to be terminated after six days because of lack of the fruit, but one sailor was quite fit for work and the other five were nearly recovered. Besides this group only the group with the cider had a certain impact on treatment, i.e. hundred years before discovery of vitamins Lind enforces this diet as inevitable in case of long sea travels, but the British naval leadership considers it funny.

Invitations for clinical research are not restricted to a single country only and therefore cooperation, opening and coordination of clinical studies requests coordination via the multinational organization with the objective to improve and facilitate the clinical research, thus bringing the undisputable benefits for all patients globally.

The ECRIN consortium has been established with the objective to interconnect the coordination centres in national networks and clinical research units able to grant assistance and support for realization of international clinical studies. Every year ECRIN therefore organizes meetings and celebrates the International Clinical Trials Day for the specialists ad well as for the general public round 20 May.
This year celebration of the International Clinical Trials Day took place from 16 to 18 May 2012 in Dublin, Ireland. On behalf of the Czech Republic – within the preparatory phase for CR entering into the ECRIN consortium – the following specialists participated in the celebration: M.D. Regina Demlová, Ph.D., Bc. Marianna Brabencová on behalf of Masaryk University, Brno and Mgr. Adam Svobodník, Ph.D. and Ing. Lucie Dokoupilová on behalf of FNUSA-ICRC, Brno.
